Give Paul Babbitt Turkee
Paul Babbitt, brother of former AZ governor and Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt, is running for Congress in Arizona's District 1, one of those weirdo districts that encompasses a good part of Northern Arizona and stretches down to Casa Grande (about halfway between Phoenix and Tucson). It is primarily a rural district.
Paul's opponent is Rick Renzi, a first-termer who won a tight race in 2002 with a LOT of help from George W. Bush and a LOT of his own and DC money. I think Bush visited here at least three times to help push Renzi to victory over a VERY poor Democratic candidate. I mean, the guy was lousy - the kind the GOP shamelessly runs, regularly.
Renzi won in 2002, 49 to 46 percent. See here for more details on Renzi's 2002 race and his weak opponent.
By contrast, Paul Babbitt is a seasoned politician who is currently a county supervisor. He has GREAT name recognition and deep, deep roots in his home district.
This seat is winnable!
Not too long ago, Arizona had 6 GOP Congressmen and only 1 Dem.
If When Paul wins, we'll have 3 Dems to the GOP's 5!
Make George W. Bush cry - give turkee to Paul Babbitt!!!!
If you give, add 1 penny (for the district #) to your donation (e.g., $25.01), so that the Babbitt campaign knows who sent them there!
Right-Wingers To Launch Anti-Moore Ad Campaign
Well, this should go over about as well as the O'Reilly/Fox vs. Franken lawsuit and the pathetic Move America Forward campaign to lobby theatres against showing Fahrenheit 9/11:
(An) independent conservative group, Citizens United, is crafting video ads for television and the Internet that slam Moore.
The group's head, David Bossie, is a former Republican congressional aide who was one of President Clinton's harshest critics. He was fired in 1998 by then-Speaker Newt Gingrich for withholding the public release of testimony transcripts favorable to the Clintons in a campaign fund-raising probe.
Bossie said the ads would target Moore and George Soros, the billionaire philanthropist who donated nearly $13 million to various groups seeking to defeat Bush.
"Look, this guy (Moore) is simply producing and advertising this movie at this time to try to affect the election," Bossie said. "And so clearly organizations like mine ... it seems to be left to us to make sure that the media is educated, as well as the American people are educated, as to just what they're up to."
Heh. I love the smell of desperate wingnuts. Smells like... victory.
...mighty mighty Atrios linked to this post and proved once again why he's an uberblogger and I am not even worthy to shine his shoes with my tongue:
What a load of crap. Bossie was fired by Dan Burton, his boss, (at Gingrich's urging it seems) not because he withheld "the public release of testimony transcripts" but because he got busted releasing heavily doctored transcripts to the press who, reliably, rushed the information into print. I'm looking at you Steno Sue.
According to Bob Somerby, Nightline even had the actual tapes. On air, they played the real tape and on screen showed the doctored transcript to presumably confused viewers, without noticing the discrepancies.

Another Victory In The War on Human Rights
More good news in the War on Human Rights:
A key investigator in the espionage case against a Syrian-American translator at the U.S. Naval base in Guantanamo has been charged with raping and sodomizing children, officials said on Tuesday.
The charges were made public during a pretrial hearing for Senior Airman Ahmad Al Halabi, who is accused of carrying jail maps, letters and other documents from U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where he worked as an Arabic translator with suspected al Qaeda and Taliban fighters who are being held there.
During a break, Halabi's attorney told reporters that Air Force Sgt. Marc Palmosina, who had overseen the probe against his client, had been charged with raping and sodomizing at least two children, one as young as 11 years old, and with mishandling classified documents.
